At Saint Joseph VTC, the students of Wasa choose a workshop depending on the profession they want to pursue.
The workshops, thought in English, are:
- Masonry
- Tailoring
- Carpentry
In each, theoretical lessons are paired with practical activities to prepare students exercise some of the most requested professions in Wasa.
Local teachers supplement the students’ education with courses in English, Mathematics, Technical Drawing, Computer Science, and Life Skills such as Entrepreneurship.
The masonry workshop is led by Amon, who teaches students useful tools in house construction.
The students could put into practice their skills the past summer, in the latest renovations of the boys’ dormitories and the construction of the girls’ dormitories.
The Renovation Project was funded by Fondazione Prosolidar and was completed in September, leaving students to enjoy fully renovated dormitories and classrooms in Wasa.
The masonry students played a determinant role in ensuring better safety in the building. They worked every day: raising floor levels to reduce the probability of floods in the raining season; widening windows and adding new safety-compliant doors.
In the tailoring workshop, led by Madame Helena, students build solid sewing skills on machines, coming up with designs for dresses, shirts, or skirts. They learn to turn their ideas into well-made pieces. Simple, yet fully finished. They also sew the uniforms for the end-of-year graduation ceremony.
The majority of tailoring students are girls. Last year we had the first ever male student, and one more this year!
The carpentry workshop is taught by Samwel. The students work for the construction and mending of roofs of the village houses. They mainly design and make various functional pieces, such as tables, chairs and shelves.
They were also involved in the Renovation Project: they made many shelves and shoe racks for the school.
